
AI is extremely fast.
AI is very confident.
AI will also look you straight in the eye and say, “Yes, this query is correct,” while quietly summing revenue twice and joining on vibes.
This is where Human-in-the-Loop (HITL) comes in — the idea that sometimes, just sometimes, an actual human should be involved before AI does something… permanent.
Think of it less as “slowing AI down” and more as keeping the band from breaking up mid-tour.
Why Fully Autonomous AI Is a Terrible Idea (Right Now)
Look, we all love automation.
But fully autonomous AI in production data systems is how you end up humming “Oops… I Did It Again” during a postmortem.

AI is great at:
- Pattern recognition
- Summarization
- Rewriting SQL
- Finding edge cases humans completely miss
AI is not great at:
- Understanding business context
- Knowing which metric is politically sensitive

Where Humans Should Stay in the Loop
Not everything needs approval.
But these absolutely do:
1. Query Changes That Affect Business Logic
If AI rewrites a query and:
- Changes filters
- Alters joins
- Modifies aggregation logic
That’s not a technical change — that’s a business decision.

If revenue changes, a human signs off.
If no one signs off, cue “Who Can It Be Now?”
2. Anything That Touches Sensitive Data
Masking policies help.
RBAC helps.
But when AI generates:
- New queries against PII

- New outputs for broader audiences
A human review is non-negotiable.
Because explaining “the model thought it was okay” does not play well with auditors.

3. Production Deployments
Letting AI deploy directly to production is like letting the drummer drive the tour bus.
You might make it home safely.
Or you might Enter Sandman at 2:37 AM while staring at a failing warehouse refresh.
AI can:
- Generate SQL
- Validate results
- Raise warnings
Humans still hit Deploy.
Because when something breaks, it’s your name in the incident report — not the model’s.
